The Hauser Diet™ Natural Medicine Program Overview
This program is designed for the person who has a chronic condition or has the desire to optimize his or her health, and is ready to take a serious step in getting to the root cause of their condition. Ross Hauser, MD and Marion Hauser, MS, RD have developed this program over years of experience in both the traditional and natural medicine fields. There are four programs and each is priced as a package. As a New Patient, the individual tests and consultations each play a significant role in the program. In other words, we use the minimum number of tests that will tell us the maximum amount of information, to help you attain optimum health. That is what the Hauser Diet™ Natural Medicine Program is all about. Some individuals may require additional laboratory tests, but most just need the program as discussed here.
Good Candidates for our Natural Medicine Program include patients who want to seriously utilize the principles of the Hauser Diet™, are motivated to make necessary lifestyle modifications, are willing to start an aggressive herbal program, and in some cases take natural hormone replacement, or do other natural medicine modalities as needed.
Cases that typically respond well to the Hauser Diet™Natural Medicine Program are:
New Patient Visit:
First, we want to welcome you to Caring Medical! Our administrative team will do everything to get you comfortable, checked in, and ready for the clinical team and the doctor. Upon arrival, you will meet with our patient liaison who will welcome you to the clinic, review our policies and procedures, and answer any administrative questions you may have.
After this, you will be escorted to an exam room where you will meet with a clinical team member. Each of our clinical members is well versed in the services here at Caring Medical, and in natural medicine. He/she will take your vital signs, along with preparing a thorough history for the doctor’s arrival. The clinical assistant will be with you throughout your entire visit. He/she will take notes for you, if applicable, so that you can concentrate on what the doctor is saying.
Dr. Hauser will spend as much time as necessary with you during your consultation in order to make an assessment and talk with you about your diagnostic and treatment plan. After he exits the room, the clinical assistant will review the physician’s orders and get you prepared to go to our in-house laboratory on the fourth floor for your laboratory tests.
Laboratory Testing Services included in the program:
Hauser Diet™ Typing
Hauser Diet™ Typing is a testing method that shows what foods an individual needs to eat for optimal energy. A person’s Hauser Diet Type is determined by the physician after two distinct tests are performed: a modified glucose tolerance test and a blood pH test. There are five Hauser Diet Types, and each is a different breakdown of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. These span the dietary spectrum from high protein and low carbohydrate, to vegetarianism and low fat. Each Diet Type is named after an animal that eats a similar macronutrient (protein, fat, carbohydrate) breakdown. The five Hauser Diet Types are The Lion Diet Type™, The Otter Diet Type™, The Bear Diet Type™, The Monkey Diet Type™, and The Giraffe Diet Type™.
Insulin Levels
Fasting insulin levels help diagnose or evaluate any abnormalities in the blood sugar levels, along with helping to determine a person’s Hauser Diet Type. Insulin levels measured while fasting can give information about the body’s sensitivity to insulin. High insulin, even with normal blood sugar levels, may indicate that the pancreas is working harder than normal to get the blood sugar level down. Keeping blood sugar levels stable is key to having sustained energy throughout the day.
Food Allergy Testing
A food allergy test is also important when determining the foods that will give you the maximum amount of energy. What we actually test are antibody levels, or which foods your body is making antibodies against. In other words, which foods does your immune system see as an invader, thus, mounting an immune attack against them. Eating these foods will not give you the optimum energy you desire, but will take energy away from you. If you have a sensitivity or allergy to a particular food, it could be causing symptoms like low energy, headaches, inability to heal properly, mental fog, and weight gain, among others. It is sometimes hard to know you have a food allergy, but once you eliminate the allergy, you will notice the difference. Our food allergy test will test for 190 of the most popular foods. This way we can appropriately determine what foods you need to eliminate from your diet that could be causing other health problems.
Blood Hormone Panel
Hormone levels are used to determine a person’s sex, thyroid, and adrenal gland hormone status and/or to monitor the progress in those patients receiving hormone replacement therapy. Hormones play a vital role in overall health. They are key to a person feeling energetic and being happy. Low hormones can contribute to lack of energy, decreased libido, depression, bad memory, low muscle mass, poor healing, increased heart disease risk, and bone loss.
Metabolic Profile
The metabolic profile is a group of tests that gives us important basic information about your health, including kidney and liver function, as well as your blood sugar and blood proteins. It also includes a thyroid profile, complete blood count, lipid panel, ferritin, and urinalysis.
C-Reactive Protein
CRP is a marker used to evaluate inflammation in the blood. CRP is useful in monitoring patients with autoimmune diseases, arthritis, infection, and systemic inflammation. An elevated CRP, indicative of inflammation in the blood, is completely abnormal. Sometimes simple dietary changes can reverse an elevated CRP back to normal.
Bleeding Time
Bleeding time test is a simple test that measures the speed in which the small blood vessels close off to stop bleeding. It is used to evaluate platelet function. Bleeding time is also useful in detecting bleeding tendencies. Natural medicine physicians ideally want a patient’s result to fall into the upper end of the normal range. Optimum bleeding is one indicator that the person’s blood is thin, which decreases a person’s risk for heart attack, blood clots, and stroke. If the results are below normal, this typically means the patient’s blood is too thick and is at an increased risk for these conditions.
Cortisol
This is one of the main stress hormones made by the adrenal gland. Testing the blood level is one way to evaluate a person’s stress levels or adrenal gland function.
Insulin-Like Growth Factor(IGF-1)
IGF-1 is a hormone produced by the liver after the liver has been stimulated by growth hormone. IGF-1 affects growth promoting activity and glucose metabolism. IGF-1 is thus an indicator of human growth hormone levels. IGF-1 is vital for the body to repair itself. People with chronic pain or chronic health problems often do not repair injuries very well.

Registered Dietitian Follow-Up included in the program:
Our staff registered dietitian will meet with you initially to discuss the physician’s Diet Typing orders. This is when you find out your true Diet Type: are you a Lion, Otter, Bear, Monkey, or Giraffe?! The registered dietitian will instruct you on how a person with your Diet Type should eat. Your Diet Type results are typically known within 24 hours. If you also have food allergy tests drawn, those results are typically known within 4 weeks. At this time, you can either have an in-office or phone consultation with the registered dietitian to review your progress on the Hauser Diet™, and review your food allergy panel. Our registered dietitian is also available during these months for email follow-up with any questions that you may have. During this time, you will also be asked to keep a food diary, to follow your progress. Additional follow-up appointments with the registered dietitian may be recommended.
Sometimes additional labwork is recommended:
The Hauser Diet™ Natural Medicine Program includes an initial consultation with Dr. Hauser, a basic set of lab tests as described above, and 12 weeks of follow-up with the nutritionist to monitor your Hauser Diet™ plan and progress. In some cases, such as a suspected underlying infection, additional lab work may be recommended to try and get at the root cause of the condition. This may include tests for infections such as Lyme Western Blot, Mycoplasma, or others. Any additional lab work is not included in the base price of the Natural Medicine Program.
Note that a follow-up visit with Dr. Hauser is not included in the cost of the package as described above.
