Why use Prolotherapy? Ross Hauser, MD, Medical Director of Caring Medical and Rehabilitation Services in Oak Park, IL has been doing Hackett-Hemwall Prolotherapy full time since 1993. Having learned the technique of Prolotherapy, using the Hackett-Hemwall method, from one of the most experienced Prolotherapy physicians in the world, Gustav A Hemwall, MD, Dr. Hauser was privileged to witness first-hand the powerful life-changing effects that Prolotherapy can have on a person with chronic pain’s life. Early in his training as a pain physician, he knew that Prolotherapy was what needed to help heal his patients and provide them with alternatives to long term pain medications, cortisone shots, continual trips to the chiropractor, eventual arthroscopy, ending in joint replacement surgery. Unfortunately, that is the traditional course of treatment for many people and we want to let the world know that other options exist.
Prolo Your Pain Away! Having observed Dr. Hemwall successfully treat thousands of patients, Ross and Marion Hauser embarked on pulling together much of the early research in the book Prolo Your Pain Away! originally released in 1995 and now on its 4th edition. Following the release of Prolo Your Pain Away! came six other books on Prolotherapy, including an epic 900-page sports book that referenced much of the research available at time of printing (year 2000) on Prolotherapy, sports injuries, use of NSAIDs and the like.
Prolotherapy for sports injuries: Since we have been seeing so many patients for so many years, we obviously have a lot to say about the success of Prolotherapy for treating pain and injury – whether due to sports injuries, arthritis, or some other injury. Therefore we began assembling and analyzing data on our patient population. Independent data analysis was provided and our results were highly statistically significant, meaning that they did not occur by chance. Our first study was published in October 2007 in Practical Pain Management called Dextrose Prolotherapy for unresolved neck pain. Since 2007, a number of our research papers have been published in Practical Pain Management and are available for you to review here on our research website.
The Journal of Prolotherapy: We subsequently started the Journal of Prolotherapy which is a very unique entity in that its target audience is both physicians and patients. The purpose of this journal is to provide the readers with new cutting edge information on Prolotherapy, as well as provide a forum for physicians and patients alike to share their stories/case reports.
Published research on Prolotherapy: We have published a number of research papers, case studies, and scientific editorials in the Journal of Prolotherapy, including articles on Prolotherapy as an alternative to surgery; Prolotherapy for chronic back pain; cartilage regeneration in knees; PRP Prolotherapy (platelet rich plasma), among them. We also present case studies with before and after X-rays that show first bone-on-bone knees, and then regenerated cartilage. These X-rays were also reviewed by an independent radiologist confirming the growth of cartilage. Our studies published in the Journal of Prolotherapy have been archived here so that they are readily available for you to read and get a better understanding that the results ARE there and they HAVE been documented.
Double blind Prolotherapy studies? After reviewing our studies, you may say to yourself, “These are all retrospective studies, not double blind studies.” This is definitely true. However, it is impossible to do a double-blind study on Prolotherapy because even an injection of sterile water under the skin has a beneficial therapeutic effect. Even if no injection was given on one side, as the control, sticking a needle into a painful area is known to have a beneficial effect (this treatment is called acupuncture). It is very difficult to prove using a traditional “double blind” scientific model, that Prolotherapy cures chronic pain, sports injuries, and regenerates cartilage tissue, hence, the retrospective, observational studies. To hear Dr. Hauser’s direct thoughts about research on Prolotherapy and double blind studies, watch this video.
Caring Medical is working hard to provide scientific evidence that Prolotherapy does indeed cure chronic pain, sports injuries, and regenerates cartilage. For us, the results are there – every day in the patients we see…
