Grounding

We have vivid memories of running around barefoot all summer long, especially in the midwestern grass. It felt extremely freeing and there is some science behind it.

Have you ever heard of grounding?

If not, grounding (also known as earthing) is reconnecting with the Earth to promote healing. The Journal of Environmental and Public Health conducted a study and the findings are pretty amazing actually.

By making direct contact with the Earth, it is thought that you can absorb its electrons, which may neutralize free radicals in the body and reduce inflammation.

“Grounding appears to improve sleep, normalize the day-night cortisol rhythm, reduce pain, reduce stress, shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation, increase heart rate variability, speed wound healing, and reduce blood viscosity. ”

The most known way to ground is by simply walking around barefoot. Now, definitely be conscious of where you are doing this, making sure it is safe. But this can be done in the grass, sand, or even in the mud! Allowing your skin to touch the natural ground can provide you with grounding energy.

As the weather warms up, the grass continues to green and you are fighting the urge to run around barefoot – don’t! Take your shoes off and be free!
