In retirement, it is important to remain active. Yes, you can finally sleep in later since you don’t have to fight traffic or punch a clock. But to maximize your enjoyment, manage your time well. Wasting hours being bored and sedentary in front of the TV day after day is simply is not good for you! Use your abundance of free time for more stimulating activities. Combine your active time with social outings, because both of these help you to be happier, as well as lower the risks of depression and dementia. Social activities like playing games, joining clubs, engaging in sports, or attending church functions connect you to people, which is good for your mental and physical wellbeing.

Participation in meaningful activities, such as volunteering, is another health boost while benefitting others in your community. There are always volunteer opportunities for tutoring, participating in restoration projects, fundraising, or helping out at an animal shelter, among many others. Those who feel a sense of purpose have been shown to live longer. Purposeful activities relieve stress, fight depression, and lower blood pressure.

Remaining active supports your physical health which includes your mobility and overall independence! Choose activities that you enjoy, so you are more likely to stick to them. Do you enjoy walking and prefer being outside? Join a walking group! Is the gym more your style? Sign up for a new exercise class that sounds interesting. You may even want to try your hand at a second career or advancing your education. This can provide social engagement and purpose while also keeping your brain sharp. Engaging in meaningful activities will add meaning and happiness to your retirement years. Maybe it’s time to plan that big road trip you’ve dreamt about for years. Have fun—you’ve earned it!
