Matthew 27:51 “And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
The tearing of the veil at Jesus’ death is one of the most powerful moments in all of Scripture. In the temple, the veil separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, the place where God’s presence dwelt. Only the high priest could enter, and only once a year. The veil was a constant reminder of distance, separation, and the weight of sin. For us today, Jesus’ sacrifice means we can experience God’s presence daily, not just in sacred spaces, but in our everyday lives.
But when Jesus breathed His last breath, that thick, heavy curtain was torn from top to bottom not by human hands, but by God Himself. It was His declaration that the barrier between Him and His people was gone forever.
What the Torn Veil Means for Us
Access: We no longer come to God through rituals or priests. We come through Jesus, our High Priest, who opened the way once and for all.
Hebrews 10:19 “We have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus.”
Intimacy: God is no longer distant. His presence is not hidden behind a curtain. He invites us into a relationship, conversation, and daily communion.
Freedom: Shame, guilt, and fear no longer keep us out. The torn veil declares that nothing can separate us from His love.
Identity: We are welcomed, wanted, and made holy by His sacrifice. We belong in His presence.
Sometimes we still live as if the veil is intact, hesitant to approach God, feeling unworthy or distant. But the torn veil is God’s reminder that He Himself made the way. We don’t come because we are perfect; we come because Jesus is. This truth invites us to approach God with confidence, knowing our worth is rooted in His sacrifice, not our own perfection.
When life feels overwhelming, when we feel unclean or inadequate, the torn veil whispers: “Come. You are welcome here.”
Lord, thank You that the veil is torn and the way to Your presence is open. Help me live with confidence, drawing near to You with a sincere heart. Remind me that nothing stands between us because of Jesus. Let me walk in the freedom, intimacy, and joy that Your sacrifice has made possible. Amen.
